Subsurface investigations
Project Greenstore is investigating whether the subsurface in the area between Randers, Mariager and Hobro may, in the long term, be suitable for the safe and permanent storage of CO2.
This requires in-depth knowledge of the geological strata deep underground. Consequently, a series of studies are being carried out in various stages.
These studies do not mean that a decision has been made regarding CO2 storage. Their purpose is to provide data and knowledge so that an assessment can be made as to whether the area is suitable at all. Only then can a decision be made on the next steps.
Seismic surveys
From January to March 2026, Project Greenstore carried out a seismic survey in the area between Randers, Mariager and Hobro. The survey was conducted using specialised lorries that sent vibrations into the ground. By measuring how the sound waves travelled through the subsurface, we were able to map its structure and create a highly accurate three-dimensional image of the subsurface and its many geological layers.
Temporary exploratory drilling
From July to October 2026, Project Greenstore will carry out a temporary test drilling operation to gather specific information about the geological strata beneath the ground. During the drilling, samples and measurements will be collected to show how the layers are structured and whether they possess the properties required for the safe and permanent storage of CO2. The test drilling is temporary, and once the work is complete, the equipment will be removed and the site restored.
