This will take place in the evening hours between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on 29 and 30 January. We will take a break over the weekend, resume work on Monday and expect to complete this phase of the activity on Wednesday 4 February.
The purpose is to send sound waves down through the various layers of soil, limestone, clay and sandstone, to a depth of 2-3,000 metres. The sound waves are captured by the geophones that have been laid out, which many people will have come across. The small controlled blasts are carried out in smaller, defined areas where the vibration trucks cannot drive due to hilly, wet and/or densely vegetated terrain, for example in the nature area north of Fussing Lake and Læsten Bakker.
Each blast involves detonating a small amount of precisely measured explosives approximately 18 metres below ground. Each individual blast point has been carefully selected in consultation with the authorities and landowners. No blasting will be carried out in areas with drinking water sources.
The blasting is carried out by one of Europe’s most experienced companies in close collaboration with blasting experts from Rambøll. The method is well-known and has been tried and tested over many years, and all necessary permits have been obtained from the authorities, landowners and the police.
Contrary to what one might think, using explosives to generate sound waves is very gentle and leaves no traces in the form of deep tyre marks or similar.
Citizen enquiries
We have received enquiries from a number of residents in the neighbourhood who can hear rumblings that sound like distant thunder. This is because the sound travels through layers of water in the ground and can therefore be perceived as louder in some places than if you were standing right next to the explosion itself.
We have also been asked why this takes place in the evening. This is primarily because we use vibration trucks during the day. The two types of sound waves should preferably be created separately to provide the clearest signals and thus the best data for the survey. So, in order to minimise the total duration of the survey, we have chosen to use a couple of evenings.
We are very grateful for the warm welcome we have received in the area. Local residents and landowners have met us with curiosity, openness and natural scepticism – and always with kindness.
